Utah is a state located in the western United States, bordered by Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada. It is the 13th largest state in the US, and the 33rd most populous. The area that is now Utah was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ute, Paiute, Goshute, and Navajo. The first Europeans to explore the area were Spanish explorers in the late 1700s. In 1847, the first Mormon settlers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, led by Brigham Young. The settlers established the State of Deseret, which was later renamed Utah after the Ute tribe. In 1850, the US Congress created the Utah Territory, which included the present-day states of Utah, Nevada, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado. In 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed, connecting the east and west coasts of the United States. This allowed for increased settlement of the area, and the population of Utah grew rapidly. In 1896, Utah became the 45th state to join the Union. In the early 20th century, Utah experienced a period of economic growth, fueled by the mining and agricultural industries. During World War II, Utah was home to several military bases, and the population of the state grew significantly. In the 1950s and 1960s, Utah experienced a period of economic and population growth, as well as an influx of new residents from other states. Today, Utah is a major tourist destination, known for its stunning natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and vibrant culture. It is also home to several major industries, including mining, agriculture, and technology.
